Ohioana Book Collection
Ohioana’s focus on literature, music, and the other arts and humanities in the state has resulted in the preservation of a collection having an emphasis in these areas with particular strengths in fiction, poetry, juvenile literature, and books about Ohio.
The collection approaches 45,000 volumes of works by such luminaries such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, William Dean Howells, O. Henry, Sherwood Anderson, Charles Chesnutt, Ambrose Bierce, Dawn Powell, Toni Morrison, Jack Matthews, Michael Cunningham, Thomas Berger, Herbert Gold, Kay Boyle, Louis Bromfield, Anthony Doerr, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Alice and Phoebe Cary, James Wright, Rita Dove, Hart Crane, Maggie Anderson, Nikki Giovanni, David Baker, Richard Howard, Mary Oliver, Lois Lenski, Cynthia Rylant, Mildred Wirt Benson, Mildred Taylor, Janet Hickman, Robert McCloskey, Virginia Hamilton, and Angela Johnson to name a few.
Though current collection development efforts center on literature and the other humanities, Ohioans have written, and continue to write, on virtually all topics.
Consequently, the entire universe of human experience, to some degree, is represented in Ohioana’s holdings, and works intended for a general audience ranging from philosophy, psychology, and religion to astronomy, physics, and zoology can be found in the collection.
