Special Features of the Ohioana Library

In this section we present several features, most from past editions of the Ohioana Quarterly, including:

The Ohio Legacy Series. The Ohio Legacy Series, cosponsored by the Ohioana Library and the Ohio Arts Council, is a series of essays featuring various contemporary Ohio authors and artists writing about how being from Ohio or how the work of other Ohio writers has influenced their own work. The series, funded in part by an Ohio Arts Council grant, ran in the Ohioana Quarterly from spring 2001 to summer 2005 and features such notables as James Wright, Ambrose Bierce, Kenneth Patchen, Cynthia Rylant, Sherwood Anderson, Virginia Hamilton, James Thurber, and many others.

Ohio Connections Literary Exhibit. The Ohio Connections Literary Exhibit was part of Ohio’s Literary Homecoming Bicentennial Celebration in 2003. A collaborative project of the Ohioana Library, the Bicentennial Commission, and the Thurber Center, it was exhibited at the Thurber Center and then the Ohioana Library until late 2004. For the project, the Ohioana Library invited current and former Ohio writers to submit poems, short fiction, and nonfiction works relating to their Ohio experience. The rich body of writing that resulted is now archived as a special Ohio Bicentennial collection at the library.

Ohio Women of Note. The Ohio Women of Note series was published in the 1974 Ohioana Year Book and includes biographical sketches of Ohio notable woman by several notable Ohioans.

Profiles of Ohio Women: 1803 – 2003. In 2003, Ohio Bicentennial’s Women’s Advisory Council in collaboration with the Ohioana Library Association commissioned the book, Profiles of Ohio Women: 1803 – 2003.

Ohio Literary Map. The Ohioana Library, State Library of Ohio, and Ohio Center for the Book at the Cleveland Public Library collaborated to produce the new Ohio Literary Map, a guide to the rich literary legacy of the Buckeye State

Ohioana Authors Radio Series. In 2005 the WOSU Stations, in partnership with the Ohioana Library, and with support from the Ohio Humanities Council and We The People, presented 52 radio features celebrating Ohio’s rich literary and historical heritage and Ohio’s contribution to American culture through the written word.
